You have to convert them to TT in Fontographer when you generate the font (a simple step). Fontographer is just as good but it doesn't work natively with TrueType fonts. If you want a simpler program to create and tweak your TrueType and Postscript fonts you will find TypeTool (by the same company that makes Fontlab and Fontographer) much easier to learn and only costs $99. You will have to buy a 3rd party book on FontLab on Amazon (can't recall the title, but it is written by Leslie Carbaga) FontLab is targeted mainly for professional font designers.

The gigantic manual that comes with the software is excellent in describing every aspect of the program, but is absolutely useless for learning it.
